Culture Collection

Culture [kuhl-chur] -noun
A style of life, religion, and customs passed down from one generation to another.

Even when I'm born in America, I still grew up with 2 different cultures. The eastern culture is influenced from my parents and family living in Taiwan, while the western culture is influenced from the surroundings I'm living in. My collection will be focused on the culture passed down from my parents and grandparents.

10 Things that will be in my collection:

1. Chinese Painting of a landscape
Even some of my artworks has been influenced by my eastern culture. My curiosity in the culture influenced me to paint in this style.
2.Chinese Paintbrush
This tool creates a style that was there hundreds of years ago. By using a Chinese paintbrush I create paintings that makes me feel closer to my ancestors since they also did the same thing.
4. Jaded Necklace
It may seem like a normal necklace, but it holds a special meaning to me. My grandma from Taiwan gave this to me which reminds me of something being passed down from one generation to another, like culture.
5. Buddha Figurine
Although I do not believe in Buddhism it is a very popular religion found in my eastern culture. I want to include this figure to represent the culture's religion.
6.Chinese Calligraphy
Just like Chinese painting, Chinese calligraphy has been here long time ago. When ever I write in this style, I also think of my ancestors.
7. Mahjong game piece
My grandpa used to play this game all of the time. When I went to Taiwan, I found that it is a very popular game that is played by all ages. It is just like America, a chess game in the park, except it's mahjong instead of chess.
8. Eating Utensils
I will bring a bowl with chopsticks. At home, I used to eat my mom's cooking with chopsticks all of the time.
9. Asian-influenced textile
The piece itself can be made as a decoration/background for the rest of my collection. It gives the collection a stronger taste of Eastern culture.
10. Tea Bag

Green Tea is a very popular health drink in Asia. Even my parents told me to drink a lot of green tea since it's very good for you.

  1. I think in addition to thinking about materials being handed from one generation to the next, you should think about the context in which it is happening in your life. What might be interesting is to also think about the idea of immigration within your family history. These objects are now here in America because of the immigration. These objects were transplanted onto a new landscape.
