wan-der-lust (wän′dər lust′) ---- n. a zealous desire to travel aimlessly; similar to having the “travel bug”, wanderlust is a characteristic possessed by individuals who feel dissatisfied with their current location and instead fantasize constantly about plans to travel
I really do wish I could travel everywhere. This summer I explored parts of New England for three weeks and kept almost everything related to the trip. Most of those objects will probably appear, as well as random objects that are not from my personal history.
Proposed Objects:
1. Snow globe from NYC – This is a medium-sized snow globe that is mostly green and gray/black. The base of the globe says “New York City” and features the Statue of Liberty and an outline of the city skyline. The figurines in the globe are similar, with Lady Liberty in the middle and a few buildings behind her (I can identify the Chrysler Building).
2. Photograph from the workcamp – 4x6 photograph of the volunteer group (with 13 members) that I worked with this summer in Concord, NH. The actual photo was taken in Portsmouth, NH. It is a digital print with a white border framing it. I keep this photograph on my shelf in my apartment.
3. Letter – an enlargement of the closing lines of a letter I received from someone I met this past summer. Its dimensions measure somewhere around 20x11”, and it was printed in black and white.
4. Postcards (various) – I also like to buy postcards from different places and treat them more as photographs that I keep. I have a lot from New York, featuring typical scenes like the Brooklyn Bridge at night.
5. Foam airplane – This is a small gray plane that my dad gave to each of us when we were younger. I think it is something you squeeze to relieve stress, but I never used it and instead kept it on my bookshelf. The plane has a (cartoon) face!
6. Boarding passes and copies of hostel reservations – These are boarding passes for my flights (three in total, due to a connecting flight back to L.A.). Secondly there are printouts of my hostel reservations in Boston and NYC.
7. Xeroxed bus tickets – My main mode of transportation was the bus and I have tickets from each trip I made. For example: Boston to Concord, Boston to NYC, and NYC to Providence
8. Magnets from various places – One of my favorites is a magnet that looks like a NH license plate. It says, “Live free or die”.
9. Blank travel journal – It is a small maroon Moleskine notebook that I bought a few months ago. It was in the same set containing my current notebook dedicated to this class.
10. Printout of a PostSecret card – This was an actual postcard from New Mexico. Someone wrote on this card, “It’s OK to leave. This is your sign”. The source of this image is the scan posted online by Frank.
11. Study abroad brochures or catalogs – Having this trait of wanderlust, I like to collect programs from previous study abroad fairs at school. I may also include other brochures for different means of going abroad, like volunteering.

I am kind of interested in the language of tourism industry and how a type of "myth" is created for each place in the way they are depicted through the mechanical reproductions (posters, magnets, post cards, etc.) This might be a project in which you look into the fantasy of places, the fact that the ideal image only exists within our imaginations based on assumptions.
