Model

Model (mod⋅el) - (n) a blueprint for constructing reproducible objects of large scales (i.e. robots of mass destruction, houses); an object that looks similar to its real counterpart but exists to fool the world (i.e. biting into a piece of "sushi" and finding out it is made of paper)

1. Gundam model: Gundams are originally made out of plastic and pieced together. I plan to reproduce it as a paper model or drawing.
2. Sushi model: As I realized that most of my items dealt with objects related to Japan, I decided to include a universal representation of Japan. My goal is to make a 3D model of sushi out of paper.
3. Paper doll: My original paper doll was two-dimensional object which enabled to possibility of changing its clothes. I plan to turn this into a three-dimensional figure that's wearing traditional Japanese clothing.
4. Architectural model: I plan to use the model of a traditional Japanese garden as a reference to make my own version. The materials I plan to use are construction paper for most of the details and foamboards for its base.
5. Koi fish model: I plan to build my koi fish out of paper. I want to add some to my architectural model to create a koi fish pond.
6. Turtle model: Originally an origami, I plan to use it as a base for a more realistic looking turtle. This version will also be created out of paper, but will be moving away from origami.
7. Bento box model: I consider this a cultural asset of Japan as I see them amongst many school students. I plan to make this a functional bento box in which you could lift the lid and see what's inside.
8. Game console model: Japan is known for producing many of our games and consoles that are here in the US today. I thinking about building one of the Nintendo consoles.
9. Shrimp model: This will be a paper model of a shrimp. I'll either create a realistic shrimp or shrimp tempura.
10. Chopsticks model: Like other Asian countries, chopsticks are widely used in Japan. These will be created out of paper and will look three-dimensional.

(Edit, 12:55 PM - I'm not exactly sure if I should keep this idea since it technically isn't something invented by me. I don't know if I should just focus my items on things that you would find in a Japanese garden or if I should start from scratch.)

Definition of a bottle

Bottle (n) a portable container that can hold many liquids
  • can be made of glass or plastic or aluminum
  • is recyclable
  • has a twist of cap
  • a coke bottle
There are two bottles of alcohol in my top cabinet.
  • also used as a verb
  • to bottle something up
  • to seal something away
I don't know why he continues to keep his emotions bottled up.
Cat [kat] noun : 1 a feline mammal 2 the opposite of a dog 3 cute and cuddly, sometimes mean and bitey

My project is about obsessively collecting cats. I was thinking about going around and taking pictures of strays like I'm picking them, but I'm not sure about that. For now I plan on making a bunch of cats.

1. A tin cat made out of a can and wire. He'll be spray painted black.
2. A cat made out of a soda can and wire. He'll be spray paint white.
3. A cat made out of paper mache. Maybe this kitty will be covered with wax to look like a hairless cat.
4. A cat made out of styrofoam. That cat will be painted in some color maybe spots like a bengal cat.
5. A cat made out of cardboard. That cat will be painted in black and white maybe.
6. A cat made out of of popsicle sticks and maybe tooth picks. That cat will be black probably.
7. A cat made out of an old magazine. The magazine will be cut into strips so that they look like long fur like a persian cat.
8. A cat made out of plastic bottles. Maybe I'll leave that one clear and stick kibble inside.
9. A cat made out of feathers. It'll have some sort of a base inside, but cats like feathers so feathers should be fun.
10. A cat scratcher/tower made out of cardboard. The cats will be placed near or on the cat scratcher/tower.

千羽鶴 Senbazuru: (n) a set of a thousand paper cranes
Cranes are a traditional Japanese mystical creature and are used as a symbol for good luck - the tradition is if you fold 1000 your wish will come true.
(I don't believe I'll be attempting to make all 1000. Normally they are arranged in 25 strings of 40 cranes - I might just try for 250 cranes?)
Each of the paper cranes will be made out of a found material:
1. water bottle labels
2. newspaper/magazine pages
3. shopping bags
4. cereal boxes
5. sheet protectors
6. fabric
7. aluminum foil
8. pages from novels/manga/comics
9. paper towels
10. tracing paper

wan-der-lust (wän′dər lust′) ---- n. a zealous desire to travel aimlessly; similar to having the “travel bug”, wanderlust is a characteristic possessed by individuals who feel dissatisfied with their current location and instead fantasize constantly about plans to travel

I really do wish I could travel everywhere. This summer I explored parts of New England for three weeks and kept almost everything related to the trip. Most of those objects will probably appear, as well as random objects that are not from my personal history.

Proposed Objects:

1. Snow globe from NYC – This is a medium-sized snow globe that is mostly green and gray/black. The base of the globe says “New York City” and features the Statue of Liberty and an outline of the city skyline. The figurines in the globe are similar, with Lady Liberty in the middle and a few buildings behind her (I can identify the Chrysler Building).
2. Photograph from the workcamp – 4x6 photograph of the volunteer group (with 13 members) that I worked with this summer in Concord, NH. The actual photo was taken in Portsmouth, NH. It is a digital print with a white border framing it. I keep this photograph on my shelf in my apartment.
3. Letter – an enlargement of the closing lines of a letter I received from someone I met this past summer. Its dimensions measure somewhere around 20x11”, and it was printed in black and white.
4. Postcards (various) – I also like to buy postcards from different places and treat them more as photographs that I keep. I have a lot from New York, featuring typical scenes like the Brooklyn Bridge at night.
5. Foam airplane – This is a small gray plane that my dad gave to each of us when we were younger. I think it is something you squeeze to relieve stress, but I never used it and instead kept it on my bookshelf. The plane has a (cartoon) face!
6. Boarding passes and copies of hostel reservations – These are boarding passes for my flights (three in total, due to a connecting flight back to L.A.). Secondly there are printouts of my hostel reservations in Boston and NYC.
7. Xeroxed bus tickets – My main mode of transportation was the bus and I have tickets from each trip I made. For example: Boston to Concord, Boston to NYC, and NYC to Providence
8. Magnets from various places – One of my favorites is a magnet that looks like a NH license plate. It says, “Live free or die”.
9. Blank travel journal – It is a small maroon Moleskine notebook that I bought a few months ago. It was in the same set containing my current notebook dedicated to this class.
10. Printout of a PostSecret card – This was an actual postcard from New Mexico. Someone wrote on this card, “It’s OK to leave. This is your sign”. The source of this image is the scan posted online by Frank.
11. Study abroad brochures or catalogs – Having this trait of wanderlust, I like to collect programs from previous study abroad fairs at school. I may also include other brochures for different means of going abroad, like volunteering.

My Collection

Friend [frend]

A significant person’s in someone’s life

A person whom one has the luck to know and share memories with.

A person whom one trusts their dreams, ideas, and feelings to.

1. Mr.Tigerrr brand t-shirt. My friend Tiger works hard to put his name out there as an artist. He will wear the t-shirt I bought from him. He inspires me every day with his ambitions. I wish I can be more like him.

2. Tofu stuffed animal. It was the first gift that my close friend Marisa gave me. She is truly a shoulder I know I can cry on. It will be placed gently on her hip in a feminine posture as she lays down on the couch.

3. Necklace with three rings. My roommate Elaine gave it to me for my 20th birthday present. She is one of the most understanding individuals I ever met. The necklace will dangle from her hand as the camera zooms in.

4. Cosmo Magazine. My friend Yudho gave this to me as a present. A friend who gives so much to others, but not enough to himself. It will cover his face as he reads it.

5. Box covered with cut out quotes of inside jokes. My ex-boyfriend Viet gave this to me when he first asked me out. It is a symbol of our rough friendship. He will lean against a counter as the box is behind him.

6. CLO sweater. A symbol of my first year of dorm life in Cielo. Ironically, where my close friend Jojo felt distant from. The strongest individual I know. She will wear it and the picture will be taken from her back.

7. Bubbles. For my birthday, my close friend Sang surprised me by visiting me when I was completely busy. He is truly an amazing person. You wouldn’t think such thoughtful and kind people existed in this world. He is proof of that. The camera will photograph his mouth blowing bubbles.

8. Laughter. The camera will zoom in on my roommate Jennifer’s mouth. I will capture her when she is smiling and laughing. She laughs at everything and always seems full of life and happiness. She is a brave soul going through a rough patch in her life. I love it when she smiles, but at the same time it makes me want to cry.

9. Frying pan and spatula. The best gift a roommate can give is food. My roommate Crystal is an amazing cook and I appreciate her kindness and crazy behavior. I couldn’t have found a better roommate.

10. Stuffed animal, birthday card and picture. This is all I have of my long time friend Nicole who lives in Miami, Florida; where I am originally from. She is in essence everything that is my past, and hopefully will still be part of my future. I will photograph the picture of our shadows next to the stuffed animal and birthday card, so in a way she is present in the photograph like all my friends are present in theirs without having to show her face.

In each photograph, none of their faces will be shown and I will have their own words replicated and displayed. I don’t know if I should do it manually or photoshop the scanned words. I will try both methods to see how they look. These photos will be displayed on the wall, in perfect rows, but as if there were missing photos in between.

Memory Melting Pot

Memory: (mem'-uh-ree) noun
plural = memories

1. a recollection of a past event or happening that is stored in the brain.
2. the ability for the brain to remember things such as facts, events, or any previous experience

My main idea for this project was to print out pictures that represent things such as happiness, sadness, or also more tangible things like a picture of a best friend, or a happy moment in time. These pictures would then be put onto a box with slips of paper nearby. As the audience would walk by, they would write down their own memory that was evoked from the certain emotion of the photo.

Things in this collection will include multiple emotions or important things in our lives:

1. A photo of a person with the question "Write down a memory of someone who was your best friend."

2. Emotion of happiness: "Write down one of the happiest moment in your past."

3. Heartbreak: "Write down a memory of a moment in time when your heart was devastated"

4. A picture of a group of friends: "Write down a memory of whom you consider to be your family."

5. A photo of something such as either a hobby or a sport that takes up a bunch of time: "Write down a memory of something that you've dedicated yourself to."

6. Embarrassment: "Write down an embarrassing moment that has haunted you."

7. Fury: "Write down a memory of a person or event that made you really angry and furious."

8. Love: "Write down the name of the first person you've ever had a crush on."

9. Enjoyment/pastime: "Write down something that you enjoy doing on a regular basis that may either be extraordinary or mundane."

10. Contentment: "Write down an activity or thing that makes you feel at peace and relaxed."

Basically, the whole point of this collection is that I love to take photographs often in order to kind of document the occasion, so that even if I at one point forget, I can always go back to the pictures to remember. By asking the classmates to contribute their own personal memories of events that only they know, then I am essentially "collecting" all of their memories as well.

Hawaiiana, Tiki Lounge

In Wikipedia the definition of Hawaiiana is, "Hawaiiana is a popular term used in reference to history and various aspects of the culture of Hawai'i, currently a region and state of the United States. The term is used especially in reflection of the periods of antiquity and the Kingdom of Hawai'i era. Hawaiiana has become increasingly popular among students of history and sociology throughout the world" For alot of the world Hawaii represents Polynesia and Oceania, the Pacific Islands. It also represents the ideal American beach destination, a tourist's paradise. Tiki Lounge is a suburban variation on the island paradise, accessible in public bars and private patio decor. Tiki himself is a deity in Polynesia, representing the first human, but also the first being to separate heaven from earth. The idea of Tiki as lounge decor is a little bit like using the image of the Christian cross to sell beer and potato chips. Hawaiiana also represents Western hegemony and military imperialism in the Pacific, because it erases the narratives of Pacific Islands culture and replicates it in the narrative of American paradise.

(1) Hula Doll on wheels is a spinning toy of a hula dancer about the size of a Barbie Doll, but dark skinned, with long hair and in a grass skirt. The grass skirt came to Hawaii when King Kalakaua invited islanders from Kiribati to build up the Hawaiian population, the majority having recently died from diseases brought in by Westerners.

(2) Small hula dancer in a plastic box, probably an airport souvenir. Long hair for women was introduced by the missionaries, before that islander men tended to have long hair and women short hair, so it was a missionary mandated custom.

(3) Pineapple dish. After the majority of Hawaiians died of Western diseases the missionaries took over most of the land. One of the missionary families, the Dole family, imported the pineapple.

(4) Tiki Lounge t-shirt with slogan in the back, "Get your freak on in the Tiki Lounge" with an image of a hula dancer. The hula is a sacred dance, it encorporates aspects of the erotic, but it is mostly a form of narrative story telling, which is lost to people who cannot understand Hawaiian and are only interested in Hawaiiana.

(5) Nylon stocking: to me this represents the stomach of the tourist in paradise who eats up customs and regurgitates and defecates their own meaning.

(6) Drawing of tourist eating islander child #1

(7) Drawing of tourist eating islander child #2

(8) Money lei made of cash.

(9) This text expanded.

(10) A background of Tiki Lounge imagery.

GREEN [green]
definition: The color achieved when combining the primary colors yellow and blue. Commonly associated with life, Kermit the frog, and envious people.

This collection is of things that I own that are green, which happens to be a lot. It is my favorite color and I tend to gravitate toward it when I buy stuff, sometimes unknowingly. The collection is kind of a poking fun at myself for all these things I've acquired, as well as paying tribute to the most awesome color!

Things to be included in this collection:
1. Green sunglasses-These are cool shades I got at Reggaefest and wear all the time! I'm surprised they haven't broken yet because I tend to break my sunglasses.
2. Green scarf-Of course this is my favorite scarf. I got it a couple years ago and look forward to cold weather when I can bust it out! It is simple but pretty.
3. Green purse-My sister gave this to me as a Christmas gift. Being my sister and all, she knows me well.
4. Green earrings-I believe I got these at the fair on ring road my freshman year of college. They remind me of living in the dorms and that whole year, which is when I wore them the most.
5. Green wallet-I can't even remember when I got this, sometime back in high school. I think it's from Target and I don't use it too much anymore because it is kind of small.
6. Green toothbrush-This was given to me by the gods! Just kidding, but I went grocery shopping at Trader Joe's and when I was unpacking my items I found this in one of the bags, not having bought it. It must have gotten left behind by the previous customer in line and then put into my bag! I'll take it. And it's eco-friendly :)
7. Green loufa-My mom bought me this when I went back to school. It works quite well to lather soap.
8. Green towel-When I left for college my family helped me stock up on all the necessities, including towels. I picked green towels and have had them since. I had to buy some new ones at some point though, because some of mine fell out of the boxes we had in the truck while traveling from the bay area to Irvine on the freeway. So I bought new green ones!
9. Green jacket-I have a couple of green jackets. This one my sister gave to me as a Christmas present again, I believe. She knows I love green so she can't go wrong if she gives me a green present. I think she's just playing it safe...
10. Green bra-Scandalous! Not really, I bought this because I thought it was fun and bright. It's from the Pink collection. Sadly, I don't wear it that much. Except I tend to always wear it on St. Patricks day along with my green outfit.

Other possibilities to the collection that I'm thinking about....Green shoes, green belt, green socks, green shirt, green vase..

light: a miracle tha makes the darkest of things visible to the eye

1o things in my collection
  1. A regular lightbulb-this is going to be a regular lightbulb for an ordiany lamp. It is going to be white and round. 95 watts
  2. A regular altered lightbulb - this is also going to be a regular white lightbulb, however I am going to write words on the outside of the bulb. Im also going to paint the base magenta.95w
  3. A spiral lightbulb-this is a spiral lightbulb and it looks very different that other lightbulbs. It is white and its an Energy saver light bulb.23 w
  4. Large lightbulb-this lightbulb is larger than the rest of the lighbulbs I will have in my collection. It has silver looking glass but inside you can see a smaller spiral lightbulb. 15w
  5. Small lightbulb- this is the smallest lightbulb in my collection. Its about two and a half inches in length and it clear. You can see the inner workings. It has 2 metal rods sticking out to connect to a lamp.
  6. Piece of plywood-this is the only thing in my collection that is not directly relevant to the rest of the things. However it will serve to put all my lightbulbs together. I will be painting on it too.
  7. Wire-I will use wire to attach it to the ends of my light bulbs and attach that to my plywood. That way the lightbulbs will be hanging. Im either going to use red or bronze wire.
  8. Light switch-I am going to connect the wires to a light switch to give the illusion that when you flip it the lights will turn on, but obviously they will not, therefore the lightbulbs are only an illusion.
  9. Part of a cable plug-I will use the input part of a guitar cable to put in my collection. It is silver and about 2 inches in lenth. It fits in with my collection because it is powered by electricity.
  10. Lastly, I will use the lights from the classroom to be in my collection. If the lights are not turned on nobody can see my collection. So once you turn the lights on it automatically becomes part of my collection;

Collection of Quotations from my Personal Stories

Story (Sto-ry)
Noun
Plural: Stories
A fictional tale shorter than a narrative that tells a series of incidents or events.

My collection is based on quotations from stories I have written and objects that match the quote.
List:
1.“You are the White Rose to my Black Heart.”
The objects that match this quote are a black heart pillow that I cut, sewed, and stuffed myself and a white rose that I dried out, so it will last for a long time. The contrast between black and white objects are classic to portray good versus evil, but in my story, I use the opposing forces as compliments to bond opposing forces.
2.“Dear Tehara,
I was in the village today and saw some children playing a game of dice. They only had one die that was homemade- clearly the kids are too poor to purchase a real pair- but, oddly, they were content none the less. I am learning lots from my trip, I must go now.
Hope you are well,
Alison”
I glued together badly cut pieces of cardboard and covered it in scrap paper to make it appear as if a poor child made it. The symbolic meaning of the dice was that happiness can be found in the most unlikely situations with very little on hand.
3.“On the desk laid five cards: the Ace of Diamonds, the Ace of Clubs, the Ace of hearts, the Ace of Hearts, the Ace of Spades, and, on top lay the colored Joker. Freya smiled to herself and picked up the hand she was dealt, feeling the confidence to continue moving forward.”
I glued the five cards in the order given and they looked like a hand spread out. The aces are the ultimate cards and the joker is unique, the Joker is important in the story, because the character that falls in love with the main character is a Court Jester.
4.“These are the magic stones from the legend, that much is true. But I will not return them to the lab; they are going back to the planet where they belong!”
The magic stones are polished rocks of different colors that I collected as a child. The stones are a variety of colors and are supposed to have an assortment of powers that all represent an ideal characteristic through supernatural powers.
5.
“Tick-Tock
Tick-Tock
Goes the clock
As it counts down the time until…”
These are the beginning words to a story that relates the magic of time. I made a cardboard pocket watch, because I did not want to bring my pocket watch that I got from my dad, into class- but for the reproduction, I will most likely use the real watch.
6. “Only a demon can raise an angel.”
The object I will use will probably be a picture of a person dressed up as a demon and a person dressed as an angel, with Photoshop edits. The background would be a forest with lights and the demon would be caring for the angel. This is the main quote from the story, it is also the title- there is heavy significance behind the words, figurative and literal in the story.
7.
“One, like a heavy heart…
Two, like a falling tree…
Three, like a flying bird.”
I will create an image that portrays each subject with the abstract number that corresponds to each part. There are three fairies that are speaking in riddle to a girl as they carry her away from her troubles.
8. “Revenge is unnecessary because those who hurt you get what they deserve when they are meant to learn a life lesson. Try to forgive the person that did this to you and be at peace.”
I would represent this lesson showing a viciously cut-up and burned candle next to one that has not been lit. In this part of the story, a girl that can speak to ghosts is leaving an institution and subtly releasing a ghost from her vengeful state.
9. “Akiko step foot on the stage and stared in awe at the trapeze set, everything was falling into place, she quickly ran up the ladder and jumped on one of the swings…”
In this part of the story, Akiko finally reached the position she had always desired in the circus; she realizes that life is not terrible. The trapeze symbolizes her freedom and happiness, I want to have a mobile with people hanging and looking as if they are swinging in the air.
10. “She pulled out a fan, from far away it appeared normal, but when stared at closely, one would see the sharp metal that mimicked wood that was sharpened at the tips and the heavy fabric with Dominicia’s symbol elegantly painted.”
I have a fan collection that I will use to take the place of the fan described in the quote. Dominicia is the ‘white rose,’ mentioned earlier. Her weapon of choice is a customized fan that she uses with elegant, deadly dance moves.

Music Player Collection

Music (myoo'zik) noun 1. The sensation of sound produced by various frequencies of vibrations arranged in a particular manner. 2. The auditory manifestation of an arrangement of meaningful symbols.

1. A product rendering of an ipod on green paper- It was suggested that everything be colored lime green. Using the paper to add the color will work nicely.

2. A product rendering of an ipod on green paper painted silver- Coloring the objects silver was another idea. This will basically be the same as the previous one, but it might have silver leafing and the positioning will be different.

3. A picture of a radio- This is just what it sounds like. Black and white might make it more interesting, though.

4. Impressionistic painting of a radio- The radio in this picture will be based on the previous one. The difference will be that only the essential elements for recognition will be reproduced in primary colors.

5. Photograph of a tape player in use- The tape player photographed while some has headphones plugged into it. The player itself will of course be the main focus.

6. Tape player with tape- The actual player will be displayed. It will be open with a tape coming halfway out.

7. Photogram of CD player- A photogram will be made of a CD player on its side. I might include a CD in image as well.

8. No CD Player- A CD will sit atop a couple of batteries and next to some head phones as if the player is invisible. Other parts from the player might be good to put in as well.

9. Original Gramophone drawing- I think it would be nice to include the grammophone drawing from the original collection. I don't know if I should photocopy it or redraw it bigger.

10. Green Gramophone- This one will be basically the same as above, just painted green. Or maybe I'll include the mini gramophone pencil sharpener I have instead.

I want to display the collection in about three or four specimen boxes with museum archive tags for identification. I may or may not stick pins in them like bugs; It depends on what sort I can find. Or maybe in preserving jars like in a science lab.

Culture Collection

Culture [kuhl-chur] -noun
A style of life, religion, and customs passed down from one generation to another.

Even when I'm born in America, I still grew up with 2 different cultures. The eastern culture is influenced from my parents and family living in Taiwan, while the western culture is influenced from the surroundings I'm living in. My collection will be focused on the culture passed down from my parents and grandparents.

10 Things that will be in my collection:

1. Chinese Painting of a landscape
Even some of my artworks has been influenced by my eastern culture. My curiosity in the culture influenced me to paint in this style.
2.Chinese Paintbrush
This tool creates a style that was there hundreds of years ago. By using a Chinese paintbrush I create paintings that makes me feel closer to my ancestors since they also did the same thing.
4. Jaded Necklace
It may seem like a normal necklace, but it holds a special meaning to me. My grandma from Taiwan gave this to me which reminds me of something being passed down from one generation to another, like culture.
5. Buddha Figurine
Although I do not believe in Buddhism it is a very popular religion found in my eastern culture. I want to include this figure to represent the culture's religion.
6.Chinese Calligraphy
Just like Chinese painting, Chinese calligraphy has been here long time ago. When ever I write in this style, I also think of my ancestors.
7. Mahjong game piece
My grandpa used to play this game all of the time. When I went to Taiwan, I found that it is a very popular game that is played by all ages. It is just like America, a chess game in the park, except it's mahjong instead of chess.
8. Eating Utensils
I will bring a bowl with chopsticks. At home, I used to eat my mom's cooking with chopsticks all of the time.
9. Asian-influenced textile
The piece itself can be made as a decoration/background for the rest of my collection. It gives the collection a stronger taste of Eastern culture.
10. Tea Bag

Green Tea is a very popular health drink in Asia. Even my parents told me to drink a lot of green tea since it's very good for you.

10 Things

Mostly are photos that are taken by me to represent the baby of the family, my 3 1/2 month old nephew. I want the photos to represent what babies do and what are consisted in their daily lives. I will have at least 8 photos of my nephew, Jalen. Each will represent a different facial expression, occasion, and activity. The photos that will be considered to be in the collection are: 1) Welcoming Jalen to the world; the day he was born
2) Eating out of a bottle; decided not include a breasfed picture
3) Yawning photo when the baby is sleepy.
4) Halloween photo. He has a costume of a giraffe for Halloween.
5) Bathtime! There will be a photo of Jalen taking a bath while his daddy is holding him. You can see the size difference with the baby's body against my brother's hand.
6) Photo of Jalen sleeping.
7) Jalen's dirty diaper; and maybe a picture of him getting his diaper changed.

Definition & Collection List

chopstick [chopstick]
noun. plural: chopsticks
a pair of sticks, traditionally made with wood, that are used to pick up food. Used in mostly Asian cultures, such as Chinese or Japanese

List:
  1. Metal chopsticks taken from a set of metal silverware. There are ridged ends at the bottom so that food will be easier to grasp.

  4. These chopsticks are from Din Tai Fung restaurant. Since it's from a restaurant, the quality and shape of these chopsticks are decent, but I still had to break them apart because it was attached at the top.
  5. Plastic chopsticks that are used to carry around. Came in a portable container as well, but it's smaller and more useful for people who pack lunch with them.
  6. The most basic type of chopstick, offered at all sorts of Chinese takeouts. This one was specifically from Panda Express, and has splinters sticking out because it hasn't been covered with glaze or anything.
  7. The chopsticks that I designed myself are originally from Panda Express, too. However, I colored them with oil pastels in all different colors and then spray fixative over them so that the oil pastels won't smudge so easily.
  8. Chopsticks that I colored over with compressed charcoal in order to make a "reproduction." Completely covered in black, with some wood peeking out, I also got these from Panda Express. Used the charcoal "stamps" on a piece of drawing paper!
  9. Paper chopsticks that I made myself from Panda Express wrappers. Had to wrap them around actual chopsticks to retain shape and will probably reinforce their shape with tape.
  10. "Paper mache" chopsticks that are long and large. Basically, made of paper mache, with glue and paper. WIll be used as the "main" chopsticks in my final collection display!

Body Double Assignment

My idea for the body double assignment is to make a shoe. I have always wanted to make one. It will be a size 10 and it will be a customized jordan shoe. It will have my name and basketball number on it as well as some designs that I have sketched to go along with it. I probably will have to sculpt it so I wont be able to wear it. My idea is for it to serve another purpose other than fitting my foot. Maybe it will hold a variety of different things or maybe can be a cup. I am not too sure about the materials I will use but that it the general idea of what I had in mind.

Body Double Assignment

For this project, the first thing I thought of making was a microphone! Cuz I like singing! Although I would not be able to make an actual working microphone that projects your voice. Therefore, this would be more of the kind that you would use to sing along to your fav songs and go crazy in your room haha. I was thinking of using wire and some styrofoam and whatever else I could find. Maybe even jazz it up a bit with some stick-on decroations of sorts.
If I don't do this, the other idea I had was a coffee mug because I love coffee and cool mugs. This seems a lot harder to me though, considering I've never attempted to actually construct something before, that can fully function. And I don't know what to use that could hold hot liquid...I'd have to look more into it.

-Jessica S

Body Double Idea

For my body double I was thinking of creating either a mini-me that displays everything I am (how I think I portray myself to others) or creating something that represents me. The mini-me would be like a model of myself; a collage of all the things that are important to me in my life. I would create the model out of clay and use pieces of material (probably cloth) to decorate and give my mini-me character. If I were to create something that represents me, I was thinking something more along the lines of a butterfly in which I would construct out of clay, wire, and mesh materials for the wings. The wings would be able to move as would a real butterfly.

Body Double Assignment

For this assignment, I'm thinking of making a large sized umbrella. It would be made of cardboard and wire and pretty much held together by some sturdy glue or tape. I'm not totally sure how I'm going to go about doing this, but the idea of making a huge umbrella is really appealing to me for some reason. I am pretty sure it will be fully functional if I make it sturdy enough and maybe it'll be big enough to fit a lot of people under it. Heh heh. Anyway, I hope this works out...

-Stephanie S.

Body Double

For my body double assignment I was thinking about making a zombie arm back scratcher for all those zombie lovers with itchy backs! The arm would be made of intertwined metal wire, newspaper, and masking tape. Over that I would paper mache the arm. I would then paint the paper mache to look like a zombie by making the skin a gray/blue tint ala Tom Savini's work in George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. The arm would have a bit of exposed wire to appear almost as if the arm has fallen off a zombie and its zombie skeleton is exposed. It would also have a handle coming out of the arm for a better grip. But all this is a tentative idea. I could also just make a real zombie out of the same materials, but I have no idea how it would "work." Either way you can't go wrong with zombiessss. :)

-Laura Buendia

Body Double Double Body

I'm planning on doing a Body Double that is about the indigenous body, the native body, the colonized body, the assimilated body, the body that is copied, the body that is territorialized, the body that is erased, the body that is elided, the body that is made foreign from itself, the body in place of itself. I'd like to make it as a series of dolls, preferably in wax or some form of substance that is similar to flesh but artificial, although I haven't worked in wax before, so whatever I can come up with, it will be something new for me, both the material and using the idea of duplication in my work, both duplication as form and as theme, by duplication I also mean reduplication.

Daniel

Body Double Ideaaaa!

For a body double idea, I was thinking of making an actual life size skeletal model of myself out of some kind of material that can hopefully stand. The function that it would have would be that it can either try on clothes (kind of like a mannequin to see how the clothes would look), or to just be like something to hold/display clothes. I was hoping to make it out of maybe cardboard, but I think that it might collapse into a giant heap of fail, so if it doesn't stay up I'll try using sturdier materials.

I have no idea how to build or plan things out. Let's hope all goes well! :D

- Kelyn.

Body Double Project

For my body double assignment I will attempt to recreate the human ribcage and use it as a CD rack. The material, if I am able to find it cheap enough, will be clay. I thought of it because some of the people in my hall and I still find use in CDs but do not have any way to do display them in a safe and unique manor and my friends were talking about body parts and my project and some how the pieces connected together and we thought it would be an interesting creation.
Each rib will hold a CD and I might use the Sternum as an iPod holder. I am excited to see how the project turns out and I would greatly appreciate any help in finding clay for a cheap price.

-Astrid L.

Body Double Project

My most recent project was a contemporary functioning 'body double' of a large wall folding fan.

I used newspaper and magazine clippings to imitate the fabric or paper traditionally used. In order to be sure it would not rip when folding/unfolding the fan - I reinforced the material with thread. Wooden slats would be connected at the bottom with safety pins.

My project's unveiling included a demonstration [IT WAS AWESOME] in its functionality - both mechanically in its folding and unfolding but also in its ability to perform the task that all fans are made to do - cool oneself off in the heat.

My Body Double Project Idea

Hello!

For my body double project, I will be making earmuffs. Not the electric earmuffs, but the traditional winter ear-warmers. They should be functional, but I don't think anyone in this world would be able to fit them on their head. I'm still unsure about the materials or where to find the tools to make them, but all I know is that I will need something fluffy and soft for the ear-section. If I cannot find any better materials, I will use wires and cardboard for the headset. The earmuffs will be arm length and possibly foldable. Hopefully, this will be achievable!

My bOdy DouBle

For my project I will be making a guitar stand for an electric guitar. I will make an arm out of paper mache and possibly paint on it to make it look realistic. Or maybe I will make a mold of my whole arm and use plaster, that way it will be more resistan. I havent decided yet.

Once I made the arm I will need two extra supports, sort of like a tripod. The supports can be made of wood or maybe even some soft metal. In order for the arm not to damage the guitar I will put some soft material inside the hand (so it doesnt scratch the guitar).

-johnny rodriguez

Body Double

I will be creating a larger-than-life heart, approximately 3 by 2 feet, made of a wire exoskeleton, and topped with a paper-mache coat. It will be painted once the mache has dried. It will have a bowl-like structure, probably in the middle of it, for heart shaped candies to be placed. This way, everyone can eat a bit of my heart. :)

~Alex Elkman

Body Double Assignment

For my project, I am creating a replica of my arm in the style of a tree giving an apple.  It will be made out of wire for a frame, but i would also like to encorporate natural aspects from a tree as well, i.e. twigs and leaves.  It will be a sculpture meant to be mounted upon a wall, similar to deer heads, but it will serve as a hanger for anything, such as coats or jewelry.

-Arielle Ramirez

Body Double

I'm not exactly set on this idea, but I was thinking of creating the skeletal structure of an arm out of aluminim foil and maybe something else to maintain the shape of the arm. Then on top of it I might add some of the mucles and veins that'll add color to it. To make it "functional" I'm going to attempt to make it capable of gripping. I'm not set on the idea, but at the moment it seems okay to me. I may add something else to it or completely change the idea, I don't know.

"Body Double" Project

I'm thinking about creating a shoulder bag or backpack out of duct tape, brown and clear packaging tape, newspaper, and possibly a paper as thick as your everyday paper bag from grocery stores. While this bag will be created with/covered in mostly duct tape, I was thinking about using the different types of tape to create a checkered pattern. In addition, the newspaper could also be used to decorate the bag which would add more patterns to it--similar to a quilt. Although I cannot guarantee that it'll hold a heavy load, it should at least be able to carry one's personal belongings.

Body Double

For my project I think i want to make a giant paint brush. I will be able to actually paint with it and I think I'll make the handle of the brush out of wire, wrapped in masking tape wrapped in plaster gauze. I haven't figured out what to use for the bristles yet but I hope it works!

My Stereo

I just finished my homemade stereo and showed it to the class by playing some music for them. I built it using lots of cardboard, a couple Styrofoam plates, a magnet, some wire, paper, business cards, tape and some glue. I built the frame of the stereo with cardboard and tape, then went on to build the speakers with the other materials. The magnet and structure for the business cards are glued onto cardboard pieces and the the plates and coiled paper and wire are glued on the business cards. It's a pretty complicated procedure to explain, but it was a lot of fun to make. I then drew the design's on the stereo with a sharpie.

(I hope it works!)

Body Double

Hi! I want to make a copy of a pair of doc martins I own, that can be used as a cup. Not sure if my idea for the cup to function correctly will work, because I've never done anything like this before. I believe I will be using plaster, duck tape, paint, shoe laces and maybe some wire metal.

Jessica R
So Stefanie showed me this really cool giant hand thingie. I think it was supposed to be a back scratcher, because, well... She used it to scratch someone's back. It was made out of masking tape, which had been wrapped around her own arm. The masking tape arm was then wrapped in aluminum foil, and coiled wire was shaped into fingers that tapered at the ends. It even has a base, so it can stand upright. I guess that's for when you're really lazy.
